What does the EU Price Indication Regulation stipulate?
This regulation applies when retailers make promotional statements about reducing the price of a product. Retailers selling in the EU must state the lowest price of a product when offering discounts. A period of at least 30 days must be taken into account. This ensures that consumers are protected from false and artificially created discounts. Examples of the Price Indication Ordinance are:
A percentage discount, e.g. 20% discount
A fixed discount amount, e.g. €25 discount
A new, lower price that is displayed together with a previous higher price, e.g. "now only €50, previously €100" or "€50/€100".
A lower starting price that will increase in the future, e.g. "now €50, soon €100".
An advertising campaign that gives the impression that the discount corresponds to the value of the tax, e.g. "Pay no VAT today".
Advertising techniques designed to create the impression of a discount, e.g. advertising a flash sale, a special offer, a Black Friday deal, a Cyber Monday special, a promotional price.
